Is it safe to do the self-driving option when touring Costa Rica?

Question by trancesend: Is it safe to do the self-driving option when touring Costa Rica?
Planning a trip to Costa Rica, is it better just to do a wholesale package tour, or do a self-drive instead to save a bit of money. Any advice, or sugesstions? thanks!

I own a car in Honduras and have also rented cars in both Honduras and Guatemala. Many, many trips throughout both countries without a hitch. Costa Rica is more Americanized and the infrastructure is much more developed than either of those countries, so I would expect you would be just fine with a car. If you really want to save money take a look at the extensive bus systems that all the Central American countries have.

The tour packages are nice but I wouldn’t limit my whole vacation to one. Every time I have been to CR I have rented a car and did all the driving myself. The car rental agencies provide insurance witch I STRONGLY advise taking (usually more than the daily rental for the car)
They also offer a GPS for about $ 10(US) per day. I know this sounds strange since CR has no real street addresses { ex.: 200 meters past the church accross from the Municiple building}, but it works. You just put in a destination like Best Western Hotel, Escazu – and go.
Also if driving, definately, definately obey the speed limit. Radar check points are abundant since the police are not allowed to “chase” !
