What do you think of this itinerary for Costa Rica?

Question by Nickname: What do you think of this itinerary for Costa Rica?
I’m leaving for Costa Rica soon and wanted some opinions on my plans.

I’ll fly into San Jose where I’ll stay for the night.
The next day I’ll head to Jaco and be there for 3 days.
Then off to Monteverde for 2 days.
Then Arenal for 2 days.
Then Tamarindo for 2 days.
I’ll then travel into Nicaragua for my last 4 days.

Any recommendations for things to do in these cities or places I should spend more or less time?

Seems like a decent itinerary to me. Why Jaco? Lot’s of night life but not the best beaches and parts are a little seedy. You might consider Manuel Antonio instead. It will take you about 2 more hours to get there but it is more interesting and has better dining options. From Monteverde the taxi boat taxi option is cheaper than going by road and nearly 2 hours quicker.

Your itinerary does sound pretty good, but I agree with the previous poster. Jaco isn’t bad, but it’s not the best. I was there for a couple days several years ago. The beach itself is very pebbly. Take acqua shoes…seriously. Also, there was a lot of litter around. Don’t get me wrong, I had a good time, but other beaches are nicer. So many people go to Jaco because it’s close to San Jose. Also..if you’re staying at a nicer hotel, like the Best Western, they have a private beach that’s much nicer than the public one I went to.

Arenal is pretty impressive. I enjoyed the hot springs at Tabacon, too.

You’re traveling a lot more than necessary and spending way too much time in San Jose.

If you can afford to rent a car it’s a great way to get around.

Day 1 – head straight to Arenal – cheaper safer and more interesting than SJ
Day 3 – drive to one of the northern Guanacaste beaches (Hermosa, Cocos, Tamarindo)
Day 5 – head back to SJ around 2:00 so you arrive at the airport to return the rental car around 6:00. You could hop in a cab and head out to get some dinner since you don’t have to be there for your flight until 9:30 or so.

I know only this. Hope it will help u.
