Costa Rica hosted the II International Planet, People, Peace conference which began on the 1st of November 2010. The three day conference organized by the National Association of Ecotourism (Camara Nacional de Ecoturismo, CANECO) brought together 200 participants from the national and international tourism industry and focused on the implementation and successes of sustainable tourism, of which Costa Rica is a recognized leader.

Glenn Jampol, President of the National Association of Ecotourism affirms, “Costa Rica has innovated, creating a responsible destination where tourists can contribute to solutions and sustainable tourism.”

The pioneering role that Costa Rica has played has helped redefine the concept of responsible tourism demonstrating that it is much more than a public relations trend. A popular beach and sun vacation destination, thousands travel to Costa Rica every year to enjoy stunning rainforest landscapes, beautiful beaches and rich biodiversity. Costa Rica offers a wide range of eco adventure tours, promising a truly unique vacation experience. The success of this years Planet, People Peace conference further reinforced Costa Rica’s forward thinking approach to sustainable tourism.

The themed agenda for the Planet, People, Peace conference for 2010 focused on the main elements of earth, air, water and fire. The conference explored specific topics pertaining to the benefits of sustainable tourism, covering areas such as the community rural tourism experience, climate change projects, tendencies and prognosis for sustainable tourism and the importance of marketing and certification.

The first day focused on the importance of building community rural tourism and its potential to compete with multinational tourism companies. Many of those who attended the conference recognized that community rural tourism is also a sure way to reinforce cultural identity and ensure tourists are experiencing Costa Rica in all its authenticity.

Alberto Lopez Chaves, Director of Sustainability at the Costa Rica Tourism Board says, “A large percentage of every dollar that goes toward tourism in Costa Rica directly serves and benefits our local communities, mainly in activities related with community rural tourism and the services they provide. Any company that wants to build a presence here is strongly encouraged to support our rural communities as part of the sustainable tourism that Costa Rica practices.”

Statements made by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the 27th September to mark World Tourism Day, further demonstrate the significance of the Planet, People, Peace Conference.

Ban Ki-Moon stressed the importance of sustainable tourism’s role in safeguarding the environment. “The tourism community is becoming increasingly aware of its responsibility, he stated. “Indeed there is much the sector can contribute to protecting biodiversity, including by integrating simple measures such as managing tour groups to minimize disturbance to wildlife or buying supplies only from sustainable sources.”

The Costa Rican tourism industry has made great strides in implementing sustainable tourism policies and local vacation rental operators agree that the country is a fitting location for more Planet, People Peace conferences. “Costa Rica is the true pioneer of sustainable tourism, those that work in the industry have seen the positive results and we know that by working together we can effect positive environmental change through the promotion of responsible tourism,” affirmed Sara Hopkins, a spokesperson for Escape Villas, a leading vacation rental management company located in Costa Rica.

Escape Villas, offers exclusive vacation rentals and has been operating in Costa Rica for over ten years, their Green Pledge is representative of a united effort and an excellent example of Costa Rica’s commitment to sustainable tourism, “We recognize that we are fortunate enough to be able to offer quality vacation rentals in some of the most beautiful places in the world. These prime locations boast some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet and to ensure their protection and conservation we are committed to being green,” explained Hopkins.

Escape Villas Green Pledge focuses on resource conservation, the implementation of best green practices and a carbon offset initiative. The company maintains a rainforest reserve and promotes land conservation and tree planting projects in Playa Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. Additionally, Villas Costa Rica supports all community rural tourism initiatives in the areas in which they offer vacation rentals.

The Planet, People Peace Conference exhibited such initiatives in November with a view to emphasize that sustainable tourism in Costa Rica is a successful model that has multiple benefits not only for the environment but also for economy.

“Some speakers at this conference have pointed out that more government/international regulations are critical. Some have spoken eloquently about the importance of certification and accreditation systems. Others have noted the importance of voluntary initiatives by travelers, such as buying carbon offset credits. Still others have emphasized the importance of making tourism more sustainable by making sustainability increasingly profitable.” Ed Westchler, Associate Editor of Everett Potter’s Travel Report explained after attending the conference.

Current world issues regarding the economy and climate change have a significant influence on the tourism industry. “Costa Rica has also managed to provide evidence that tourists continue to increase their concern about these matters, and what governments, corporations and organizations should comprehend is that tourists are consistently choosing tourist destinations using these models of sustainability,” Glenn Jampol, President, National Association of Ecotourism.
